Sheila Metzner

The photographs by Sheila Metzner belong to the classics of contemporary American photography. Her work can be found in some of the leading collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her style is characterised by a velvet looking surface with a delicate, textured appearance.

Bathed in a distinctive, gentle haze, the scenes appear timeless and retain a magical aura with picturesque colours. Metzner is one of the few photographers in the world who work with the unique French Fresson print, a complicated process involving gelatine oil pigments in five colours. As early as the seventies she travelled to Paris to learn the complicated chemical process first hand in the Fresson family business.

The photography of Sheila Metzner is neither nostalgic nor historical. It produces instead a unique atmosphere through gentle colour contours, whose picturesque soft focus creates the impression of an expensive fabric coating. Her works from the last four decades focus in particular on still-life images, landscapes, and fashion photography.

It is the elegant materiality of her flower pictures that is most reminiscent of Metzner’s legendary inspirations, photographs artists such as Edward Steichen or Edward Weston, and through which an aura of timeless beauty is created.
