The 20th century also saw the introduction of new media, like photography, in which the nude has figured heavily as a subject. At a time when it was claimed that photography couldn’t be considered a fine art, the earliest monochrome art nudes mimicked high-art forms, or alluded to classical that were popular in contemporary painting. However, as the century progressed, experimental nudes, often black and white photographs of women, became more widespread.

Fine art nudes in photography explore both the intimacy and universality of the body. At LUMAS, our photography portfolio includes iconic works by established artists as well as the cutting edge aesthetics of promising newcomers.

Nude Art Photography: Our Curated Collection

We believe art is for everyone. Owning a genuine, rare piece of art is an incredible experience. It is therefore our mission to share this feeling with the world. With over 3,000 works in our collection, it is the ideal place for those looking to explore fine art nudes throughout the decades. We also offer limited edition, hand-signed works by established names and talented up-and-coming photographers.

If a naked body is body deprived of clothes, a nude, by contrast, is the body disburdened of more metaphorical weights and shackles. The nude is the human body as a work of art. One of the most controversial, yet long-standing subjects, art nudes are much more than the male and female form – they represent the spectrum of human emotion and the deep symbolic language of the body. Both instantly relatable and intriguingly foreign, the fine art nudes in the LUMAS collection explore this intimate topic.

The nude is a central feature of Western art. A preoccupation of the ancient Greeks, and then on the decline during the Middle Ages, nude art underwent a revival with the Renaissance movement. Iconic works such as Michelangelo's “David” reintroduced the male form, whereas “The Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli revived the female figure. Following these masterpieces, classically themed nude art remained a popular subject among artists until the end of the 19th century. Since then, contemporary art has moved toward representations free from classicism and idealization. Now the body is an open subject, often stark and revealing. Not limited to the representation of the male and female nude, nude art continues to push our notions of gender and identity.

Nude Black and White Photography

Black and white nude photography is where tradition meets modernity. From classic female nudes to beautiful photo portraits of celebrities and everyday subjects, the Lumas portfolio of black and white nude photography has it all. Explore our curated selection of elegant black and white art nudes.

Originally created by classic photographers like Man Ray and Dora Kallmus (Madame d'Ora), black and white photography became a preffered medium for capturing the nude form, even after the invention of color photography. Throughout its history, nude black and white art has been a mirror onto society, a site where our passions and anxieties about sexuality meet the refined demands of artistic form.

Today, photographers use sophisticated digital methods, and make intricate use of light and shadow, in order to get at rich black and white textures mapped onto the male and female body. For the nude photographer, the body is a vast landscape, from which both natural and abstract forms emerge.
