Background Information about Horst P. Horst

As one of the leading figures in the field of fashion photography, Horst P. Horst created icons of the times. The giant of the art world presented his models as unapproachable and seductive at the same time, developing a new image of women. In 1930s Paris, at the beginning of his career, Horst photographed designs by Lavin, Chanel, and Schiaparelli. He quickly became a fixture at the French edition of Vogue. The historical events that defined the times, however, were also to shape the direction of his life. Under his birth name Horst Paul Albert Bohrmann, Horst travelled to the United States before the outbreak of the Second World War. Shortly before this crossing, he had published an image that remains synonymous with his work, a photograph that still influences major photographers: The Mainbocher Corset.

Through the use of dramatic lighting, the model appears as if sculpted from marble. Spellbound, we scan the light and shadow for the artistic details. The piece’s visual austerity is dissolved through the flowing material of the lacing of the corset. This combination of sophisticated sensuality and sculptured presentation brought Horst widespread attention. As the Second World War came to an end, colour photography began to appear in magazines. Now, instead of stylish glamour, there was a demand for authentic, natural-looking images. Horst’s unique shots for American Vogue feel fresh and spontaneous. In a career spanning 60 years, he produced a total of 94 cover photos. His remarkable works have long been impossible to purchase on the art market. The VOGUE Collection includes colour images from the master photographer in limited editions for the first time.

As important as Horst P. Horst’s apprenticeship with the famous Bauhaus architect LeCorbusier was, his relationship with the lead photographer at the French edition of Vogue, Baron George Hoyningen-Huené, was equally influential. The latter was not only the catalyst for Horst to produce his own photography, but was also a mentor, companion, and source of inspiration to him. This autumn, Horst P. Horst is being honoured with an extensive exhibition at London’s Victoria & Albert museum. Confirmation, once again, that fashion photography has long been recognized as a distinct artistic genre. The photographer is not just shooting dresses and models, he is capturing the spirit of a generation, their hopes and dreams. His images from the 1930s and 1940s remain innovative today.
