Background Information about Arthur Elgort

Arthur Elgort is without doubt one of the great figures of contemporary fashion photography. A New Yorker, he began to take an interest in photography while studying painting, as the former offered the perfect avenue to engage with others and complemented his social nature. Elgort first caused a stir in the fashion world with his 1971 debut in British Vogue. His candid, vibrant “snapshot style” represented a break from the prevailing aesthetic norms and made him a new star on the scene.

Unlike his contemporaries’ meticulously planned and carefully composed fashion shoots, Elgort focused on movement and the unique magic of each moment. He even started his career by photographing dancers, but by the 80s and 90s, as the age of the supermodel flourished, he was immortalizing the likes of Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and, of course, Kate Moss.

In the mid-nineties, as Kate Moss was reaching the pinnacle of her international fame, Elgort presented a side of the model we had never seen before through a series of refreshingly light-hearted, almost humorous shots. He depicted the supermodel inside a laundrette and pushing a shopping trolley – both symbols of working class life – and in doing so, challenged the high-society flair of the fashion world.

With an almost journalistic perspective and a feel for the perfect moment, Elgort reveals the personality of his models. To him, authenticity and charisma are more important than makeup. His images are full of a lust for life and spontaneity rarely found in fashion photography.
