Background Information about Devin Miles

Introduction

Devin Miles is one of the pioneers of modern German Pop Art. In the span of just a few years, he has rocketed onto the international art scene. Miles takes the viewer on a journey through time, celebrating the idols of the past. The viewer sees legendary cars, celebrated heroes, and graceful divas. Iconic figures including Marilyn Monroe, Steve McQueen, Marlene Dietrich, and James Dean radiate the everlasting charm that has long-since become a part of our cultural history. In his works, the artist honors the 50s and 60s as well as Pop Art itself, a loudly colorful genre that once revolutionize the art world.

Miles’ large-format collages are a synthesis of screen printing, free painting, and airbrush. Miles’ uses up to twenty layers of screen printing in order to create visual depth. In addition to the traditional canvas, he also uses hand-brushed aluminum plates as a substrate. The unusual, relief-like surface texture reveals different nuances from every angle. These innovative printing techniques suit the revolutionary style of Pop Art – just think about American artist Andy Warhol, who adopted his screen printing method, which was unconventional for Fine Art in the 1950s. Back then, when Warhol took up the screen and squeegee, the process was mainly used as a commercial printing technique.

Screen printing can also demand new forms of representation from Devin Miles. With great finesse, the artist interweaves the elaborate silkscreen process he developed himself with airbrush and painting. The multi-layered pieces make it clear, that Pop Art will never stand still. On the contrary, the German artist shows that the genre is more modern than ever before.

It is no wonder that art collectors and experts adore Miles’ oeuvre and assume it will appreciate enormously in value. Miles’ first exhibition was in 2007. These days, his work can be seen alongside works by the likes of Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg. LUMAS is offer strictly limited editions of these sought-after artworks, some of which have previously only been available as one-off originals.
