Places with intense aura, somewhat like how Normandy is the archaic embodiment of country life or New York the embodiment of the urban, can easily become cult destinations. Resisting their appeal demands a proper portion of excitement or a full-grown neurosis. What is generally loved, and also therefore most photographed, is the chance to capture one’s own account, a particular challenge. How can you create an unexpected photograph of the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building or of the pictorial granges in the sparse northern French landscape? The photographer Holger Jacobs (*in Hamburg) shows us how. He goes to such lengths in his visualization of “Mundane Spaces” that he gives us a new impression of portraits on bank notes, which have passed through our hands thousands of times. Newspaper photos of missing children he compacts into a series. Jacobs composes neither with unfamiliar perspectives nor extreme lighting: the the colors’ interplay does much more for him. With a computer-backed impressionism, he dissolves the lines to surfaces and creates from his photographs (light sketches) a light painting and distills it to a saturated aesthetic of predominant warmth. Once he discovered photography as a bacchanal counterto verbal language after his law studies, he moved to Paris and became an assistant to star photographer Peter Lindbergh in 1985. The flexible perfection, with which his mentor sought to engender the erotic, transformed itself in Jacob’s work into a smooth sensualitythat caresses the eyes as well as the memory.
